Recently, ReThink Energy Florida hosted a workshop where we made our very own solar chargers. Yes, I soldered the components you see here and made one--and it works!
Also, there's a solar oven workshop coming up on Saturday, November 17th, also hosted by Rethink Energy Florida. See the Green Calendar for details. Another way to save energy and the environment!
Thinking of hurricanes and people desperate to charge their mobile devices, here's an alternative that uses flammable materials instead of the sun. The Biolite company makes a camp stove that converts heat from the fire into usable electricity. The little stove will recharge phones, lights and other gadgets while you cook dinner. Unlike solar, BioLite CampStove is a true on-demand source. The lightweight stove is fueled by twigs and does not use petroleum gas. Here's a link that explains their thermoelectric technology. I'm thinking it may need a little screen between the stove with flames and my phone?
