"A society built on green design, sustainable energy and closed loop systems, a civilization afloat on a cloud of efficient, non-toxic, recyclable technology." ~~Alex Nikolai Steffan

Green roofs have been sprouting rapidly in places like Brooklyn and catching on around the world in commercial facilities.  According to the Green Roofs for Healthy Cities' annual survey (opens as PDF) of its corporate members found that the green roof industry in the U.S. and Canada increased 115% between 2010 and 2011.

This November, Southface Energy Institute will host a training workshop in Atlanta on green infrastructure policies, performance and projects.  This specialized half-day course complements Green Roof Professional (GRP) training and is in the approval process for continuing education credits.  More information this and on other Green Roof Professional Training courses is here.

Because green roofs--and green walls--mitigate stormwater run-off, they can be one solution to the overburdened systems  As a part of the Florida Field Guide to Low Impact Development series, the University of Florida publishes a an easy to understand guide to building green/eco roofs (opens as PDF).  Included is graphic of the components of a green roof and its benefits. There are a few commercial kits available for residential structures.  It takes a qualified installer to make sure the green roof is right for the structure.
The GreenSave Calculator lets you compare roofing alternatives over a specific time period to determine which has the lowest life-cycle cost. It is excellent for determining whether higher initial costs are justified by reducing such future costs as operating, maintenance, repair or replacement costs and/or producing additional benefits, such as energy savings. You can also see whether some roofs have lower initial costs but cost more over time.
With the large system in its business park, there is another reason to travel to Zaragoza, Spain!
