Choctawhatchee Electric Cooperative (CHELCO) in northwest Florida has recently started offering net metering to residential and commercial customers with photovoltaic (PV) or wind energy systems up to 10 kilowatts (kW) in capacity. Net metering is the practice of allowing owners of renewable energy sources to automatically sell any excess electricity generated by their solar panels or wind turbines back to the utility company. CHELCO serves slightly more than 40,000 residential and commercial accounts in Walton and Okaloosa counties and portions of Holmes and Santa Rosa counties. In addition, a partnership with the Alabama Electric Cooperative and Waste Management, methane gas from Springhill Regional Landfill is extracted and burned to generate 4.8 megawatts of green energy. The electricity produced is then added to generation resources already being used to generate power for customers.
