SOLAR PLANE

It may be a little hard for Green Readers to think sun after all of our recent days sitting under Tropical Storm Fay's deluge, but, while the solar plane won't replace commercial airliners tomorrow, Catch a glimpse of its flight at the BBC Science and Nature site.

This plane, called the Zephyr-6 just set an unofficial world endurance record for an unmanned aircraft by staying aloft for more than three days. The plane, which can carry five times its weight
, is powered by state-of-the-art solar arrays that charged and recharged ultra-lightweight batteries. A similiar version of the Zephyr launched (by hand--which you can see in the video) in 2007, flew for 54 hours and reached an altitude of 58,000 feet.
