follow-up: My fellow green-blogger, Parvez from India, sent me an LA Times report that a new company, Sapphire Energy, uses algae, sunlight, carbon dioxide and non-potable water to make "green crude" that it says is chemically equivalent to light, sweet crude oil. Estimated time for commercial production: five years.
There's so much development in this area, there's now a web site called Oil From Algae
Although Sapphire says that it will consume carbon dioxide in its processing and the 'green' crude that is produced will produce fewer pollutants, the Union of Concerned Scientists is waiting to see the greenhouse gas effects of the entire process, from production to combustion, before passing judgment.
