BRINGING ENERGY EFFICIENCY TO ALL CITY RESIDENTS?

Recently, BBCAT (Big Bend Climate Action Team) proposed to City staff a pilot project for a City of Tallahassee low income neighborhood that would bring ceiling insulation to hundreds of homes. Utilizing the City's existing program, an energy audit would be followed by the installation of blown insulation in a residence. Many of the City's highest electrical usage for heating and cooling occurs on Tallahassee's southside in older, poorly insulated homes, with antiquated leaking windows and inefficient heating and air systems.

This would be a win-win for both the residents and the City. The 'Go Green' Tallahassee initiative could really gain some traction in energy savings, not to mention some good press, while residents burdened with high utility bills could realize some relief with improved ceiling insulation--a first step toward improving the efficiency of homes.

City staff has not embraced the idea as currently proposed. At least one southside neighborhood is preparing to launch its own campaign with the City in an effort to have the City endorse and execute the pilot.

Stay tuned. . .
