Energy Efficiency Or Nuclear Power?

Remember back in December 2006, when Progress Energy announced its intention to file for construction and operating license for two new nuclear power plants in Levy County on 3,000 acres of land they had purchased about seven miles from the Gulf? (Levy County is about 140 miles south of Tallahassee.)

Later in May 2007, the company announced that it would delay for at least two years, its decision to build either a nuclear or coal plant. At that time, there was much press about the company's focus on energy efficiency programs to offset 2,000 megawatts of electricity.

Now it appears that a new nuclear power plant is on the fast track to be built on the site in Levy County. World Nuclear News reports that the first nuclear site to be built in the US for over 30 years may become a reality. Filings have been submitted to Florida's Public Service Commission. This means a new plant could be operational in about eight years.
