Green Energy News reports that Florida Power and Light in Juno Beach announced that it applied to the California Energy Commission to construct, own and operate a 250 megawatt solar thermal power plant in the Mojave Desert in California.
There are several solar plants (Solar Generating Energy Systems) already in this desert which are selling power to the grid--the largest solar installation in the world. Another group of installations the Mojave Solar Park will deliver 553 MW of solar thermal when it is fully operational in 2011. The Nevada portion of the Mojave Desert covers over 25,000 square miles and receives up to twice the sunlight received in the rest of the US, making it a logical place to intense solar installations.
