Green Lodging Hotel Recycles

In a recent post, I commented that during a recent stay in a hotel, certified by the green lodging program within the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), I saw no recycling provisions for the massages of soda bottles and other disposable that were served in the conference meeting rooms.

Through quick follow-up by the Green Lodging staff at DEP, I learned that the hotel does recycle from conference and banquet rooms. Below is the response from DEP and from the Florida Hotel's general manager!

"Thank you very much for your e-mail and your comments about the Florida Hotel in Orlando. I’m sorry I was unable to respond to you sooner. We very much appreciate guest observations about designated Florida Green Lodges. Comments such as yours help to keep the integrity of the program high.

Please find below a response from the hotel concerning your comments. It appears that they have resulted in the Florida Hotel making some positive changes that will enhance their green lodging efforts.

Dear Peter,

I am pleased to read our Guests are aware of and care enough to write supporting all of the Green Lodging program efforts at the Hotel and throughout Florida. We welcome all comments and appreciate all suggestions.

All of our meeting rooms and pre-function areas are assigned a Banquet Captain, Servers, Housemen and Stewards. When refreshing a meeting room or servicing a banquet meal function all, the Banquet Captain oversee the clean up process with all of the items placed on large oval trays which are carried to the back of the house to waiting Queen Mary’s. These rolling Queen Mary shelving units are then sorted by the Servers, Housemen and Stewards for proper disposition. We have the Large Blue Recycle Bins located throughout the back of the house.

At the time of our Florida Green Lodging application process we felt since the Banquet and Group areas are sold for premium dollars we would make the process seamless to our Guests handling all of the recycle efforts behind the scenes. The point is well taken and what we will do from this point is to offer the Group Contact the option of having recycle bins through out their planned functions. If a group declines the Hotel will still be sorting behind the scenes.
Best Regards,

Michael P. Proimos, General Manager

I countered to the hotel, that perhaps putting up some signs indicating that materials from banquet and meeting rooms are recycled.
