Insulating concrete forms, solar water heating and high efficiency windows and doors, along with low maintenance landscaping and careful choice of construction materials to reduce chemicals inside the home all contributed to the newly reconstructed home in Orlando to qualify as the first in the Florida to earn the LEED Silver designation.
LEED for homes, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, developed by the US Green Building Council, is administered by the Florida Solar Energy Center at the University of Central Florida.
This residential home was destroyed by Hurricane Charley in 2004 and its owners saw an opportunity to rebuild, and reduce their environmental footprint at the same time.
